Investing in our children is a commitment to the future of our country and economy. That is why the Australian Government invests in children’s early years. AEDC data helps ensure this investment is directed to the areas of greatest need.
AEDC results are shaping the design and application of early childhood programs and policies to make sure children have safe and nurturing learning environments where they can grow and thrive.
The AEDC collects data on how young Australian children have developed by the time they start school. The Australian Government has worked in partnership with state and territories, schools and parents to collect this important information, every three years since 2009.
The AEDC reports the percentage of children who are either developmentally vulnerable, at risk and on track across each of the five domains. AEDC results at the community level are publicly available. This helps pinpoint the services, resources and support children need in their communities.
The Australian Government, states and territories are committed to conducting all AEDC collections in an effective, transparent and ethical way. The conduct of the AEDC will aim to minimise the administrative burden on schools, teachers, and parents.
The Australian and State/Territory governments recognise the importance of ensuring:
- data is collected, stored and used in line with strict guidelines to protect the privacy of all children and teachers
- ethical, privacy and other appropriate consents are obtained for each collection
- procedures and practices are reviewed each three-year cycle so future collections continue to be implemented to high standards.
